Palestinian rights make a rare appearance in Congress - Samer Badawi  - A first-of-its-kind bill introduced this week focusing on the rights of Palestinian children could pave the way for greater transparency and accountability in America’s dealings with Israel.

Members of Congress on Tuesday introduced a bill requiring the U.S. Secretary of State to certify that funds bound for Israel “do not support military detention, interrogation, abuse, or ill-treatment of Palestinian children.” The proposed legislation, put forward by Minnesota Representative Betty McCollum, had ten co-sponsors when it was announced.

Although that number may seem small, especially when measured against the 268 current co-sponsors of the so-called Israel Anti-Boycott Act, the “Ending Israeli Military Detention of Palestinian Children Act” is further evidence that the Palestinian rights movement in the U.S. is gaining unprecedented ground.

“As the first-ever bill on Palestinian human rights introduced in Congress, we see [this] as a direct challenge to the systemic impunity enjoyed by Israeli forces,” said Brad Parker, an attorney with Defense for Children International-Palestine, which has been working to support McCollum and other members of Congress through its No Way to Treat a Child campaign.

According to a statement issued yesterday by DCI-Palestine, in the West Bank alone, some 10,000 Palestinian children — defined as those >>>

Congressional hearing on Jerusalem shuts out Palestinians - Michael F. Brown Lobby Watch - 11 November 2017 - Congressional hearing on moving US embassy to Jerusalem did not include a single Palestinian witness.

Palestinians need not apply
. The subcommittee on national security in the US House of Representatives hosted five witnesses on Wednesday to address the bombshell issue of moving the US embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

But not one of the witnesses was a Palestinian or spoke for Palestinian rights and interests.

The hearing indicates that conservative members of Congress are intent on upping the pressure on Donald Trump to relocate the embassy. Initiation of the move could come as soon as 1 December when the presiden >>>

Steve Bannon: „I’m proud to be a Christian Zionist“ - Dr. Ludwig Watzal -  For these words, Steve Bannon, the former chief strategist to President Donald J. Trump and currently Executive Chairman of Breitbart News Network, received standing ovations at the annual gala of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) at the Hyatt in New York City.

ZOA, the extreme right-wing Zionist organization, has been for Trump and Bannon right from the start. Besides Bannon, other Zionist extremists attended the event, among them Alan Dershowitz, a former Harvard law professor and a Zionist bigot, Tom Cotton, Rep. Senator from Arkansas and the darling of the Zionist Israel lobby. He earned some fame initiating a childish letter to the Iranian leadership defaming the Iran nuclear deal. Joe Liebermann also attended who is famous for his extreme one-sided Israel support. And last but not least, America’s ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, who de facto serves instead as Israel’s ambassador to the US. >>>

Can Trump and Saudi Arabia force Palestinian surrender? - Omar Karmi - 14 November 2017 - Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas receives Jared Kushner, US peace process envoy and son-in-law of President Donald Trump, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, 21 June. Another US presidency, another peace plan. Time has ticked on Donald Trump’s promise to secure the “ultimate deal,” and now we are reportedly getting close to some kind of concrete proposal.

There is no word yet as to just exactly what that proposal is. Trump appointed Jared Kushner, a senior presidential advisor, foreign policy novice and his son-in-law, as his special envoy to the peace process and he has now had 10 months to come up with something.

(Incidentally, that Kushner is Trump’s son-in-law prompted a most spectacular bit of orientalist writing in The New York Times report on the mooted peace plan where, “the fact that the president entrusted it to a close relative was taken as a sign of seriousness in the region.” Because, you know, Arabs.)

It would be tempting to hope that this particular administration might come up with something completely unheard of. After all, this is a president who in the early days of his administration seemed to challenge even two-state orthodoxy.

Since then, however, nothing the Trump administration has said or done has veered in any way from the usual pro-Israel Washington orthodoxy. And none of the speculation offered by the Times about the outlines of a Trump plan suggests anything new either.

A two-state solution is proffered as the ultimate goal with some “confidence-building” measures tossed in for >>>

Ron Brummer, executive director of operations for the Israeli Ministry of Strategic Affairs and Public Diplomacy, speaking at Bnai Torah synagogue in Atlanta in 2016. - A high official in the Israeli government says that the groups supporting BDS, or Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel, are doing a “great job,” and Israel has to come up with more aggressive ways to counter them. “If you want to promote boycotts against Israel, be my guest, it’s your right. But there will be a price tag,” Ron Brummer said last week.

The new battlefield for BDS is in Europe, where companies are under growing pressure to divest from the West Bank. The way to counter that pressure is to pass anti-BDS legislation in American states (as state legislatures and governors have done in Texas, California, Maryland, New York, and other states), so that if a company boycotts the West Bank, it loses 10’s of millions in U.S. contracts, said Brummer, the executive director for operations of the Israeli Ministry for Strategic Affairs and Public Diplomacy.

And Israel advocates must explain that there is no distinction between boycotting the West Bank and boycotting Israel. There is only one economy between the river and the sea, Brummer said. “If you want to divest from the West Bank, Judea and Samaria, you have to divest from Israel, which means you boycott Israel completely,” he said.

Brummer also called on American Jews to give money to Jewish groups in Europe and South American to fight BDS, because throughout history, Jews have always helped each other.

Brummer spoke at the Israeli American Council last Sunday, November 5— an organization funded by Sheldon Adelson– in a panel titled “The Real BDS: Bigotry, Discrimination and Slander.” The room was jammed with about 150 people, many young  >>>

Israel Denies Entry to European Officials Over 'Support for Israel Boycott' - Purpose of visit was to meet convicted Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti in prison, two ministers say - Ilan Lior , Jonathan Lis and Josh Breiner - 14.11.2017 - Israel announced on Monday it would deny entry to seven members of a delegation of European officials using the recently approved legislation that bars visits by anti-Israel boycott activists.

The 20-member delegation, which was set to arrive in Israel next week, was to include European Parliament members and French mayors. The Interior Ministry's Population, Immigration and Border Authority said seven of the 20 delegation members will be barred from entering Israel, adding it obtained information that they had called for a boycott of Israel. >>>

Gabbay: No Settlement Will Be Evacuated - 13. 11. 2017 - Israel will not evacuate any settlement in the occupied West Bank or Jerusalem, under any peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the leader of Israeli Labor Party Avi Gabbay stated, on Sunday.

Ma’ariv paper quoted Gabbay as saying that it is impossible to evacuate 100 thousand settlers under any future peace settlement, saying that it is irrational to create such a cruel event.

He added, according to Al Ray,: “We are in an era of peace so let us find creative solutions, and we should not increase the size of construction outside the large settlement blocs.” >>>

World Zionist Organisation gave private Palestinian land to settler outpost - 13. 11. 2017 - The World Zionist Organisation (WZO) gave privately-owned Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank to an unauthorised settler outpost, Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed today.

According to the report, the WZO’s settlement division handed over 12.5 acres of land to Ma’aleh Rehavam, a settlement outpost south of Bethlehem, despite having no authority to do so.

The settlement division is “considered a quasi-private entity”, relates the paper, operating “as a branch of the WZO”, and, though “not under the direct authority of the Israeli government”, is “completely funded by the Israeli taxpayer”. While its main role “is to manage land in outlying areas of the country”, in reality “a large part of the settlement division’s work is focused beyond Israel’s sovereign borders, in the West Bank”.

Israeli authorities “allocate land to the settlement division, which is responsible for managing it. The settlement division in turn then provides it to various communities”. >>>

For some Palestinians in love, this slum is the only place to live - Miriam Berger - A view shows the Israeli barrier as buildings are seen in Kfar Aqab on the outskirts of Jerusalem, near the West Bank City of Ramallah - Mohamad Torokman - 4. 11. 2017 -  Kafr Aqab is no one's dream destination: the overcrowded neighborhood separated from adjacent East Jerusalem by Israel's barrier in the occupied West Bank is notorious for rutted roads, drugs and violence.

But for Palestinians in marriages in which one partner comes from the West Bank and the other from territory Israel had declared to be part of the Israeli state, the slum is a haven where they can live legally together.

When 23-year-old Yacout Alqam, a resident of East Jerusalem, first met her fiancé, she loved that he was "very kind. Very free. Everything."

There was just one catch: "The problem of identification cards," said Alqam, the wide smile on her small frame fading. >>>

Israeli settlers bulldoze Palestinian lands in Nablus - Israeli settlers on Sunday morning leveled Palestinian lands in Asira al-Qibliyeh town, south of the northern occupied West Bank province of Nablus.

Head of Asira al-Qibliyeh Village Council, Hafedh Saleh, told a PIC news correspondent that an Israeli bulldozer razed Palestinian land tracts near the illegal settlement outpost of Yitzhar, built on Palestinian lands in the area.

According to Saleh, the measure makes part of Israeli attempts to expand the aforementioned settlement, built in 2002 and comprising makeshift homes and structures for raising livestock. >>>

European conference on settlement activity declares Israel 'apartheid regime' - 10. 11. 2017 - Representatives from 24 European countries, including parliamentarians, legal experts, journalists, and activists, met in Brussels earlier this week in the first European conference on Israeli settlement activity, agreeing on a declaration that accuses Israel of establishing an “apartheid regime” in the West Bank.

According to a press release, the agreement was named the Brussels Declaration, and agreed on the following stipulations:

1. Israel, the occupying power of the Palestinian territories since 1967 continues its policy of confiscating and judaizing Palestinian land and building settlements over it. These settlements have turned, with the passage of time, into an incubator for settler’s “terrorist organizations” such as HiiltopYouth, Paying the Price and Revenge. >>>
