Elor Azarya enters prison despite last-ditch attempt at postponing incarceration -  Former Israeli soldier Elor Azarya began his 18-month prison sentence on Wednesday for the point-blank shooting and killing of a Palestinian in 2016 -- after a last-minute attempt to postpone his incarceration.

Azarya was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to a year and a half in prison for shooting and killing 21-year-old Palestinian Abd al-Fattah al-Sharif as the disarmed Palestinian lay severely wounded on the ground after allegedly committing a stabbing attack in the southern occupied West Bank city of Hebron in March 2016.

Azarya shot al-Sharif in the head, with a number of witnesses quoting him as saying "this dog is still alive," and "this terrorist deserves to die" before he pulled the trigger.

Israeli media reported that dozens of Israelis gathered both outside of Azarya’s home in Ramla and in front of the military prison known as Prison Four in central Israel to show support for Azarya, who has been seen by many Israelis as an unjustly punished hero.

Israeli news outlet Ynet reported that the demonstrators’ slogans included “Elor is a hero,” “Do not fear, Elor, Israel is with you,” and “If you don’t return the boy, we will overturn the state.”

Meanwhile, The Times of Israel said that Azarya held a party on Tuesday night before heading to prison, during which Israeli pop song “Mother’s Hero” was played -- a likely reference to the portrayal of Azarya as Israel’s son who was only doing his duty. >>>

Zehn Kilometer Niemandsland - Tausende palästinensische Jerusalemer leben hinter Israels Trennanlagen.

Shaul >>>

Breaking the Silence › Israeli soldiers talk about the occupied territories >>>

The deep, and endless, occupation - Zeina Azzam  - “I was part of a machine that spread a lot of devastation and fear,” concludes a soldier as he reflects on his role in Israel’s military occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. His words are part of actual testimony gathered by an Israeli group, Breaking the Silence, and published in a book titled Our Harsh Logic: Israeli Soldiers’ Testimonies from the Occupied Territories, 2000-2010. A play that was recently part of the Capital Fringe Festival in Washington DC, “It’s What We Do,” animated the soldiers’ sentiments and recollections of serving in the occupied Palestinian territories, using verbatim accounts. Written and directed by Pamela Nice, the play showed the soldiers, as she says, in “roles as instruments of injustice against Palestinians.” Their words shed light on how the Israeli military carries out the policies of Israel’s government.

Generations of these soldiers have been acting as enforcers of a military occupation that turned 50 years old this year, one that should have been—according to the Hague Regulations—a “temporary situation.” Instead, after the June 1967 Arab-Israeli War, when Israel launched a preemptive strike and defeated the armies of Jordan, Egypt, and Syria and took over and occupied thousands of square kilometers of Palestinian territory (in addition to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and Syria’s Golan Heights), the Israeli government initiated a far-reaching institution of military occupation that has become a way of life not only for the long-suffering occupied Palestinian population , but also for the Israeli armed forces themselves and the Israeli public at large. >>>

Palestinian journalists the latest victim of Hamas-Fatah rivalry - Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man - Palestinian Authority security services arrested five Palestinian journalists in the West Bank Tuesday night in what appears to be a worrying manifestation of escalating tensions between Fatah and Hamas.
Related stories

Fatah-aligned PA security forces accused the five journalists of “leaking sensitive information to hostile parties,” presumably Hamas, according to a report on the official Palestinian Authority news agency WAFA Wednesday. Several of the arrested journalists work for Hamas-affiliated news outlets.

WAFA also published a parallel report on Wednesday about Hamas security forces arresting and detaining two journalists, at least one of whom works for a Fatah-aligned media outlet. One of the two, Fouad Jaradeh, has been imprisoned for two months by Hamas, which accuses him of collaborating with the Palestinian Authority government in Ramallah, according to a Gaza-based rights group. >>>

Five Palestinian journalists seized by PA security forces - The Palestinian Authority’s intelligence services have launched a campaign of arrests against a number of Palestinian journalists in the West Bank on Tuesday, 8 August. Five journalists were seized by PA intelligence agents, including Qutaiba Qasem and Mamdouh Hamamreh in the Bethlehem governorate, Amer Abu Arafa and Ahmed Halaiqa in al-Khalil and Tareq Abu Zeid in Nablus.

Hamamreh, a correspondent for al-Quds TV, was arrested when PA forces broke into the studio in Husan, west of Bethlehem. His colleague, Qasem, was called for interrogation at the headquarters of the security services after they encircled his home, demanding that he turn himself over.

Abu Arafa is the correspondent of the Shehab News Agency; when he was seized, his cellular phones and computers were also taken. Halaiqa, also seized in al-Khalil, reports for al-Quds TV.

Abu Zeid was arrested from his home in Nablus; he is a correspondent for Al-Aqsa TV. Meanwhile, the journalist Islam Salem was summoned for interrogation.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate strongly condemned the arrests as a systematic attack on freedom of the press and freedom of expression. The union also denounced the Palestinian Authority’s justification for the detentions, that the journalists were “leaking sensitive information to hostile parties,” including, apparently, other Palestinian political parties. The syndicate considered this justification “worse than the detention.”  >>>

Israel's empty threat to 'shut down' Al Jazeera - Communications Minister Ayoub Kara held a press conference at which he promised to ‘close’ Al Jazeera. He doesn’t exactly have that type of authority, let alone the ability. - Moshe Ronen - 6. 8. 2017 - Israel’s new communications minister, Ayoub Kara, declared this week that he would act to shut down Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Kara explained that he is the only minister in the Israeli government whose mother tongue is Arabic, and therefore he is the only one who understands the channel’s Arabic-language broadcasts. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasted no time praising Kara for working to shutter the station.

And so it was that Israel followed in the footsteps of four Arab states — Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates — who themselves shuttered Al Jazeera’s offices in their respective countries earlier this summer, after severing all ties with Qatar, where the station is headquartered. >>>

Mahmoud Darwish: Palestine’s Poet.
(13 March 1941–9 August 2008)

Mahmoud Darwish: Palestine’s Poet. - (13 March 1941–9 August 2008) - In 1971 PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat said of the great Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish: “I can smell the fragrance of the homeland on you.” In this observation the leader captured a central part of Darwish’s philosophy — whilst Palestine has left beautiful traces in the air it is a concept that can’t quite be touched.

Perhaps the most common reflection on Darwish’s work is that Palestine is a metaphor for the loss of Eden, or a constructed paradise. As he himself observed when you are deprived of home, it becomes a “need” and a “lust”, or a dream which is more beautiful than the reality. The state of exile becomes all encompassing.

“This jasmine in the July night is a song
for two strangers who meet on a street leading nowhere.
“Who am I after your two almond eyes?” the male stranger asks.
“Who am I after your exile in me?” the female stranger asks.” (Night That Overflows My Body)

No wonder the reverberations of exile seep out into Darwish’s writing. At six years old he fled his home in Upper Galilee, which was being bombed by the Israelis, and sought refuge in the camps of southern Lebanon. When he and his family returned one year later, settlements had been built on the remnants of their home.

His family were classed as present absentees and lived as refugees in their own country. From a young age Darwish was confronted with the fact that Palestinians were second-class citizens but still had to celebrate the creation of Israel. Whilst at school, on Israel’s Independence Day, Darwish wrote a letter to a Jewish boy to explain that he could not be happy until he was allowed to have what the Jewish boy had.

“You can play in the sun as you please, and have your toys, but I can’t. You have a house, and I have none. You have celebrations, but I have none. Why can’t we play together?”

At a poetry festival in Nazareth not long afterwards Darwish read Identity Card, part of which is below. It was inspired by a visit to the Israeli police to renew his travel pass and went on to be published in his first collection of poetry. >>>

Israeli settlers launch march to Abu Rajab family home in Hebron's Old City - Aug. 9, 2017 - Hundreds of Israeli settlers originating from France launched a march on Wednesday afternoon toward the Abu Rajab home in Hebron’s Old City, which was forcibly taken over by settlers some two weeks ago, to reportedly show solidarity with the settlers.

The march was set off from an illegal settlement post on al-Shuhada Street and the Tel Rumeida neighborhood in the Old City, and stormed to the Abu Rajab family home, as the settlers waved Israeli flags.

Locals told Ma’an that the march was a way for the Israeli settlers to “confirm their control” over the building, despite even the Israeli Civil Administration deciding that the settlers' alleged purchase of the property was in fact invalid.

Residents of the Abu Rajab house have been embroiled in a legal battle with Israeli settlers for years, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared his intention to encourage the establishment of a new illegal Israeli settlement there to be named Beit Hamachpela. >>>
