April 1, 2017 - Dear friends and colleagues, Finally, I was allowed to access my email account after 12 days of being banned from doing so during the most intense phase of the ongoing interrogation I am subjected to by the Israeli authorities.

The BNC statement on this issue accurately sums up this latest chapter in the Israeli regime’s war on the BDS movement.

Due to a gag order, I am not allowed to delve into any facts about the case. I am thus denied the ability to even refute the vicious lies published by Israel’s regime against me. I am in no hurry to do so, though, as their main objective — attempting to tarnish my reputation and, by extension, hurting the BDS movement — has clearly failed.

Their campaign of repression has, to an extent, backfired. By preventing me from travelling to the US to receive the Gandhi Peace Award, jointly with Ralph Nader, Israel’s regime has inadvertently increased the publicity around this award.

Before anything else, I read the many moving messages of solidarity that many of you have sent, and this gave me even more strength and hope to resist the McCarthyite witch hunt against me. I deeply appreciate your letters and the sincere sentiments of support that they convey. I am so grateful to everyone who wrote an article and every organization that issued a petition in this respect.

Nothing empowers human rights defenders facing political persecution like the warm feeling that there is a whole community of activists and people of conscience standing with them and carrying on the struggle no matter what.

For more than a year now my colleagues in the BDS movement and I have been warning about the „tarnishing unit“ established by the Israeli Ministry of Strategic Affairs as a key organ in fighting BDS. As I have personally written and argued many times, this devious unit’s key function is summed up in „digging up dirt“ against human rights defenders and networks associated with the BDS movement and if no dirt is found in fabricating it >>>

Sonderseiten - Die Apartheid + Kolonialpolitik Israels muss beendet werden durch - Boykott, Desinvestment und Sanktionen (BDS) >>>

Palestine Updates Nr. 31, 27.

So, was tut Israel?

In Solidarität Ranjan Solomon, Redakteur

Read more

New Hamas charter holds contradictory views on establishment of Palestinian state -  While a draft version of Hamas’ new charter which leaked on Sunday evening raised questions over whether the movement would explicitly accept a Palestinian state along pre-1967 borders, the document will make clear that "our rivalry is with the occupation who occupied our land," Hamas official Ahmad Yousif told Ma’an on Sunday.

The text of the new agenda -- which is to revise the Hamas charter for the first time since it was declared in 1988 -- was leaked by Lebanese news site Al-Mayadeen. Shortly after it was leaked, Yousif confirmed to Al-Mayadeen that the document was indeed Hamas’ new charter, which would officially be released in the coming days.

While Point 19 of the charter mentions “the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state along June 4, 1967 lines, with the return of refugees and displaced persons to their homes,” the document does not explicitly accept a Palestinian state based on the borders, and goes on to reject “any alternative to the liberation of Palestine completely from its sea to its river,” referring to the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.

The section also states that Hamas “will not relinquish any part of the land of Palestine, no matter what the reasons, circumstances, and pressures could be, and no matter how long occupation may continue." Yousif explained in an interview with Al-Mayadeen that "Hamas accepted an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders as a matter of preserving Palestinian consensus,” however stressing that Hamas would maintain their right to armed resistance -- a point reiterated multiple times in the draft charter. Yousif confirmed to Ma’an on Sunday evening that the new charter continues to “legitimize all types of resistance and struggle against occupation.”

Contrary to reports in Israeli media, the new charter will not officially recognize a state of Israel, Yousif said. “The charter does not recognize the Israeli occupation or breach our irrecoverable principles.” Palestine, according to the Hamas' definition, "is one inseparable region and is the homeland of the Palestinian people.”

“The fact that the Palestinian people were expelled from their land and displaced through the creation of the Zionist entity does not annul the Palestinian people's right to all of their land, nor does that establish a legitimate right for the usurper Zionist entity to have this land," the charter asserts.

Meanwhile, the charter will also notably differentiate between “the Jews as a People of the Book and as followers of a religion on one hand, and the occupation and the Zionist project on the other hand,” affirming that “Hamas does not view the conflict with the Zionist project as a conflict with the Jews because of their religion." “Our rivalry is with the occupation who occupied our land," Yousif affirmed. He said that a number of amendments were made to the charter “in response to criticism of Hamas over anti-Semitism, racism, and other issues viewed as violations under international law."

He also stressed that the document was prepared “as a reaction to ongoing Israeli aggression and the confrontations between the occupation and the stone children," referring to Palestinian children who throw stones at Israeli forces as a form of resistance and face up to 20 years in military prison for the act.

The new Hamas' charter applauds “Western entities,” as well as Arab and Muslim countries, who show solidarity with the Palestinian people, Yousif said, adding that the he expects Hamas will be regarded in a more positive light by “several countries, especially in Europe,” after the charter is officially released.

The new charter also "includes a positive attitude toward the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), and considers it as a national umbrella for all the Palestinian people." >>>

Kartensammlung - Wo ist Palästina? >>>

The Jewish revolution -  Philip Weiss - In the last week there have been four momentous events in the Jewish political world, two of them soul-crushing, two of them uplifting. I say momentous because the two uplifting events signal a major change in Jewish political culture that is likely to leave many of us speechless in months and years to come, and that represents a revolution in definition of community.

First, the two deadly events. A week ago AIPAC, the leading Israel lobby organization, held its annual conference in Washington, and never has US politics seen such a sumptuous procession of rusty musty cadavers trooping across a stage with so many scripted lines. Even Republican conventions look bacchanalian by comparison to this staged obeisance to wealth. Not a word was out of place. Donald Trump was cheered; his surrogate Nikki Haley was bathed in love. AIPAC shut its doors to any possible critics and even the journalists who got in complained that the most interesting sessions were off the record. The conference sought to signal to political Washington that sanctifying Israel remains a bipartisan project; Nancy Pelosi cooperated by saying that the US aid to Israel is “sacred… sacred.”

The decadence of the affair, the sense that all this could crumble in a second, was evident in the biggest news out of the event: Israeli strongman Benjamin Netanyahu is apparently dyeing his hair.

A few days after the conference, the mainstream organization that is trying to muscle AIPAC offstage as being unrepresentative of the American Jewish community — J Street, which loves Israel but does so critically — shot itself in the foot when its youth branch, J Street U, joined a rightwing conference against BDS, the Boycott campaign aimed at Israel. J Street did so with the faith that its adherence to Zionism could resolve its fierce opposition to the Israeli occupation with all the rightwing organizers that can’t get enough of occupation; but J Street judged wrong. Its Zionism cut no ice. Its idealistic young representatives were smeared as anti-Semites, and J Street has been trying to cover its ass ever since for breaking bread with Netanyahu-loving, Islamophobic, Trumpist, intolerants.

Why did it go in the first place? The message to all young idealistic people was clear: J Street is afraid of the progressive camp, because progressives are increasingly anti-Zionist. But in the era of Trump, progressives are the only game in town. Hmmm, who can lead?!

Those were the soulcrushers. Now for the Vivaldi. A week ago the young Jewish resistance movement IfNotNow demonstrated at the AIPAC conference, and hundreds of young Jews came to see a speech by Cornel West and a chained-arms action at the gates of the conference in opposition to the occupation. The fact that the biggest news from the demonstration was the beating of a Palestinian teacher by the Jewish Defense League, the troglodytes who felt called to oppose the demo, only highlighted the purity and innocence of this movement. >>>

'The occupation will collapse. And then we'll build a moral society here' - On Saturday night, thousands of Palestinians and Jews gathered in Jerusalem for an anti-occupation protest marking 50 years since the occupation began. Breaking the Silence head Yuli Novak spoke to demonstrators about the importance of solidarity and resistance to the violence and racism of the Israeli government. Below is a transcript of the speech, translated from Hebrew. - Yuli Novak

These are dark, somber days. Our country is dominated by occupation, messianism, racism, ignorance, callousness, and violence. Blaming the right-wing government won’t help. Nor will sitting in our living rooms fantasizing about the day they’ll be replaced. And please, enough with the “Anyone but Bibi” rhetoric — Yair Lapid is no different.

The change we need to enact here requires courage, honesty, and the willingness to sacrifice something – the willingness to give up privileges and pay a price. Show me one politician – one! – who wants to be prime minister and is also willing to do this.

During dark days like these marked by daily violence, intensifying hatred, terrible racism, the occupation, there’s only one way to win: resistance. Struggle. Solidarity. That’s it. Resistance — that’s our strength and the regime’s weakness. Joining struggles is our hope, and what will bring about the collapse of the regime. Solidarity is our civil power, and the regime’s greatest fear. And there’s nothing more frightening for bad regimes than the moment when citizens stand up, resist, and fearlessly struggle. >>>

Explained: What’s the story with Netanyahu and the media? - The editor of Israeli media watchdog The Seventh Eye, Shuki Tausig, explains the current scandals involving Netanyahu and the media, and what they mean for journalism and democracy in Israel.

The Israeli media is often lauded by outsiders as fierce and independent, often in order to demonstrate the ostensible strength of the country’s democracy. But a number of public scandals and political dramas over the past few months have exposed a far less flattering picture. - Haggai Matar

Most of the story includes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in one way or another. The latest political showdown saw Netanyahu trying to shut down Israel’s new public broadcaster before its legally mandated launch at the end of April 2017, and attempts to exert political influence on other public and private media outlets.

Another scandal includes secret recordings of the prime minister negotiating a quid pro quo that would give him favorable coverage by Israel’s best-selling newspaper in exchange for legislation ensuring it has favorable market conditions. All of it shows how much outside influence there is in the Israeli media. >>>

Israeli police officer who assaulted several Palestinians in Jerusalem resigns - The Israeli police officer who was caught on video violently assaulting and injuring several Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem last month has resigned, Israeli news website Ynet reported on Monday.

Ynet identified the police officer as Moshe Cohen, saying that he resigned Monday at a hearing held at the National Headquarters of the Israel Police after his attorney apologized on behalf of him.

Ynet quoted Cohen's attorney as saying, "the officer takes full responsibility and announced his resignation from the police at the beginning of the hearing. He expressed real and deep regret and this is his opportunity to apologize to the citizen and tens of thousands of officers."

An indictment was also filed against Cohen, accusing him of a series of violent offenses, Ynet reported.

The video of the incident, which took place in the Wadi Joz neighborhood of East Jerusalem, showed Cohen, dressed in plainclothes, aggressively verbally confronting a Palestinian truck driver -- later identified as 50-year-old Mazen Rafaat Shweiki -- after the latter allegedly hit the officer’s car.

Over the course of the nearly two-minute long video, Cohen proceeded to headbutt, slap, punch, kick, and knee the Shweiki in the lower abdomen. Shweiki told Ma’an that he sustained fractured ribs following the assault.

Ahmad al-Tawil, a 26 year-old Jerusalemite who witnessed the scene, told Ma’an that Shweiki was starting up his vehicle when Cohen, dressed in civilian clothing with a gun on his belt, went up to the truck driver and started berating him. >>>
