Netanyahu’s holy war, and the coming Jewish schism - Yakov Hirsch - This is one in a series of columns by Yakov Hirsch on Hasbara Culture, and its impact on discourse and politics in Israel and the U.S. You can see the other columns here. This article will try to make sense of the vitriolic reaction by Benjamin Netanyahu and his defenders to the U.S abstention of UN Security Council resolution 2334 condemning settlements a week ago. There is no question that the Israeli response has been way over the top. And it’s not just a matter of a few undiplomatic slips of the tongue. Uri Misgav is not alone in his impression (in Haaretz): [T]he reaction of the prime minister, his ministers and courtiers…. looks possessed, irrational, contrary to Israel’s short-term and long-term interests. This is how Henry Siegman saw it (in the National Interest): Netanyahu’s ‘j’accuse’ against Obama and his administration is a concoction of… lies and deceptions… >>>

Israeli officials back shoot-to-kill policy of Palestinian suspects, says Human Rights Watch - 'No attacker, male or female, should make it out of any attack alive,' says defence minister - Harriet Agerholm - A supporter of Elor Azaria, an Israeli soldier charged with manslaughter by the Israeli military after he shot a wounded Palestinian assailant as he lay on the ground holds a placard during a protest calling for his release Reuters

Leading Israeli officials have been encouraging soldiers and police officers to kill Palestinians suspected of attacks regardless of whether lethal force is necessary, according to a new report by a leading human rights organisation.

Human Rights Watch has compiled numerous statements by senior members of Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration and the country’s police force, which appear to endorse using lethal force against suspects, irrespective of whether anyone is in danger.

International human rights law limits lethal force to circumstances in which it is necessary to protect life, and in which no other less extreme option is available.

“It’s not just about potentially rogue soldiers, but also about senior Israeli officials who publicly tell security forces to unlawfully shoot to kill,” said Sari Bashi, Israel advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. >>>

Terrorism: How the Israeli state was won - Tom Suarez - Initial reports on King David Hotel bombing said 50 dead; the blast killed 91. But as Suárez explains in State of Terror (p 146), the King David bombing was not, as is commonly believed, the most deadly terror attack of the pre-state period. (...) My work is based principally on declassified source documents in the National Archives in Kew. When I have had to rely on published works, I have trusted established historians who cite first-hand sources. Everything I will say here tonight is based on such source material.

Our topic is of course the so-called “conflict” in Israel-Palestine, a tragedy that has dragged on for so long that it feels static, indeed almost normalised. But unlike other deadly conflicts, this one is wholly in our power to stop—“our” meaning the United States and Europe. It is in our power to stop it, because we are the ones empowering it.

We are now approaching the centennial of the British Original Sin in this tragedy, the Balfour Declaration. The British role in Palestine was a case of ‘hit & run’: The Balfour Declaration, in which the British gave away other people’s land, was the hit; and thirty years later, Resolution 181—Partition—was the run, leaving the Palestinians abandoned in a ditch.

Zionism was of course among the incarnations of racial-nationalism that evolved in the late nineteenth century. Bigots were Zionism’s avid fans—it was the anti-Semites who championed the Zionists. Gertrude Bell, the famous English writer, traveler, archaeologist, and spy, reported, based on her personal experience, that those who supported Zionism did so because it provided a way to get rid of Jews. >>>

2016: A deadly year in the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel - Ma’an News Agency - "The past year has been one of the deadliest and most violent in recent years for Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip. In 2016 alone, more than 100 Palestinians were killed, the majority shot dead by Israeli forces" >>>

Breaking News On CNN, PLO Dr Hanan Ashrawi Condemns Israel Violence
