Israel demolishes homes, water pipes, and agricultural structures in Jordan Valley - Ma`an News Agency - Israeli forces destroyed residences, agricultural structures, solar panels, and water pipes in the occupied West Bank district of Tubas, in the Jordan Valley, on Sunday morning. Bashar Bani Odeh, the head of Khirbet Atuf village council, told Ma`an that four Israeli bulldozers accompanied by 12 Israeli military jeeps raided the area of al-Ras al-Ahmar and destroyed nine structures, including structures used to care for cattle. >>>

Israeli violations for the past 384 days:

(...) Israel’s occupation of Palestine enters its 50th year. Nonetheless, Palestinian inalienable rights, particularly their right to self-determination, remain unfulfilled. It is time for the international community to uphold their historic and legal responsibility and to take serious actions to protect the Palestinian people and to pressure Israel to end its prolonged belligerent occupation of Palestine.

Since last September 2015, the State of Israel killed 248 Palestinians, 74% of them are 25 years-old or younger. As part of its collective punishment policy against the Palestinian people, the Israeli occupying authorities have retained more than 100 bodies of Palestinian martyrs since last September 2015 while rejecting calls made by members of the international community, including Human Rights Organizations, for a serious investigation into Israel’s extra-judicial executions.

Though the so-called Israeli Supreme Court had decided to release the bodies, the Israeli Minister of “Internal Security”, Gilad Erdan, decided not to release the bodies, adding pain to their families.

The Trials of Dareen Tatour: A year of detention and no end in sight - Kim Jensen and Yoav Haifawi - It was exactly one year ago that Dareen Tatour’s ordeal began. In the pre-dawn hours of October 11, 2015, Israeli police and border guards stormed into Palestinian poet’s family home without a warrant or an explanation for the shocking and disturbing intrusion. They arrested, interrogated, and eventually charged Dareen Tatour with the crime of ‘incitement to violence.’

In the past year Dareen has been held in three separate prisons, confined to house arrest, and has faced an aggressive yet scandalously vacuous prosecution—all as part of a flagrant Israeli strategy to suppress Palestinian voices who dare criticize Israeli policies.

During an outbreak of predictably cyclical violence between Palestinians and Israelis last fall, Dareen Tatour—a citizen of the Israel—posted two status updates on Facebook and a poetry clip called Resist my people, Resist them, which protested the outrageous murders of three Palestinian children. >>>

Four Palestinian prisoners continue hunger strike against administrative detention as two reach agreement - 11. 10. 2016 - Four Palestinian prisoners are continuing a hunger strike against administrative detention after two prisoners ended their strike on 10 October in an agreement with the prison administration.

Jawad Jawarish and Maher Abayat ended their hunger strikes in protest of arbitrary transfer and isolation inside occpation prisons. They had refused food since 25 September 2016. Jawarish, 40, was transferred Monday from solitary confinement in Ashkelon prison to the Nafha prison; he was one of 120 Fateh prisoners recently transferred from Eshel to Nafha. Jawarish was then moved to the Ramon prison; during his strike, he was moved to Ramle and Ashkelon prison before returning to Nafha. He is serving a life sentence for participating in the Palestinian resistance during the second intifada. Abayat, 38, is serving a 25-year sentence for participation in the Palestinian resistance during the second intifada. He was held in solitary confinement in Ela prison; following his strike, he will be returned to general population in Ramon prison >>>

Palestinian mothers teach life, not hate - How am I supposed to explain to my six-year-old son the heinous acts he witnesses Israel perpetrating against his people? How do you suggest I explain the violence of your occupation to my kid, Mr. Netanyahu? - Dalal Erakat

In his address to the UN General Assembly last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had the audacity to insinuate that Palestinian mothers teach their children to hate. As a proud Palestinian mother, I must remind him of the life his country — through half a century of occupation and exile — has given our children. As a Palestinian mother, I demand an apology from Mr. Netanyahu, and I call on Israeli mothers to join me.

My oldest son, Sari, was born and raised in Canada until the age of six, at which point my husband and I decided he had the right to grow up in his own country and among his family. So we returned to our homeland. I always looked forward to the moment when I would get to see my parents on the weekends or watch my kids play with their cousins during recess at school. >>>

‘Ethnic cleansing’ becomes ‘No ethnic cleansing’ in Israeli history by Benny Morris - Jonathan Ofir  - Benny Morris is one Israeli historian who has definitely written about the history of Israel and Palestine in a way that made him an authoritative reference for many scholars and writers, particularly concerning the 1948 Nakba. In his pioneering role as a ‘new historian’, already in the late 1980’s, he scrutinized many declassified documents from and around 1948, and reached the conclusion that not only was there a “transfer” (as he quite systematically regards it), but that this “transfer” was “inevitable and inbuilt in Zionism – because it sought to transform a land which was ‘Arab’ into a Jewish state and a Jewish state could not have arisen without a major displacement of Arab population”. (In Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem)

That is a conclusion, an admission, of some magnitude. You don’t just go back on this one. But, unbelievably, Morris does. At least he tries to. Yesterday he writes in Haaretz, an article bluntly titled: “Israel conducted no ethnic cleansing in 1948.”

The background for his claim is another Haaretz article by Daniel Blatman from last week, titled “Netanyahu, This Is What Ethnic Cleansing Really Looks Like,” which is itself a >>>

California scholars decry ‘assault on academic freedom in the interest of one foreign gov’t, Israel’ - California Scholars for Academic Freedom on October 10, 2016 - The following is a press release from California Scholars for Academic Freedom (CS4AF), a group of over 200 scholars at twenty California institutions of higher learning, urging a renewed and strong support by university administrators for academic freedom and the right to free speech and dissent in light of the alarming recent history of assaults on academic freedom, including a list of over 20 such assaults:

On September 13, well after the school year had begun, UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and Dean Carla Hesse cancelled a course entitled “Palestine: A Settler Colonial Analysis” that had been vetted and approved by all the appropriate committees and authorities. It was soon revealed that 43 Zionist organizations (some of these may be organizations in name only) had sent letters of protest asking for its suppression. Faculty and student protest forced the administration to reinstate the course. But adding insult to injury, UC Berkeley administrators have refused to apologize publicly, and have continued to conceal the obvious reasons for their caving in to outside pressures behind a veil of administrative lingo and half-truths.

The UC Berkeley case is but the latest assault on academic freedom that has increased in intensity over the last fifteen years, overwhelmingly in the interest of one foreign government, namely Israel. >>>
