Für Ali Dawabshe zum Weltkindertag

Felicia Langer, 22. September 2015

"31st July Israeli Settlers firebombed the Dawabshe family house in Duma, a Palestinian village in the Nablus region of the occupied Westbank. 18 months old Ali died that night, while his father Sa'ad succumbed to his wounds on August 8, and his mother Rham on September 7". (The Dawabshe Family in the arithmetic of Apartheid.

Video: Palestinian woman shot, left to bleed by Israeli soldiers - Ali Abunimah - This video posted by the news agency PalMedia shows a young Palestinian woman left to bleed on a sidewalk in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron after she was shot by Israeli soldiers on Tuesday morning.

By evening, Palestinian media reported that the woman, 18-year-old Hadil Salah Hashlamoun, had died of her injuries. Instead of being given immediate medical treatment, the video shows her being pulled roughly out of the frame of the camera, her scarf coming off as her head drags on the ground.

Israeli settlers and soldiers can be seen standing around, and in some cases smiling and laughing in the background. Wattan TV reported that the young woman was left to bleed for more than 30 minutes. In a separate incident, a Palestinian man was also killed overnight by Israeli forces near Hebron. Local sources told Ma’an News Agency that Diyaa Abdulhalim Talahmah, 21, was killed by the army during a raid in the village of Khursa.

Israel has claimed he tried to throw a Molotov cocktail at its soldiers. These shootings come just days after Israel loosened even further its already lax permission to its forces to use live ammunition against Palestinians. >>>

Ungewohnt in seinen zehn Jahre Präsidentschaft.

Did Palestinian Authority help undermine Israel boycott in Iceland? - Ali Abunimah - The mayor of Reykjavík is backing away from a measure adopted by the Icelandic capital’s council last week boycotting all Israeli goods until Israel ends its occupation of Palestinian lands.

Dagur B. Eggertsson now says he wants to limit the boycott only to products from Israeli settlements built in the occupied West Bank in violation of international law.

The mayor’s quick cave-in came after a storm of protest and implied threats from anti-Palestinian groups, as well as harsh criticism from the Israeli government. >>>

HRW accuses Egypt of 'mass home demolitions' on Gaza border - Human Rights Watch on Tuesday accused Egypt's military of having "violated international law" through mass home demolitions and evictions over the past two years along its border with Gaza.

Egypt's army in October created a wide buffer zone in the border town of Rafah in the north of the Sinai Peninsula, where it says tunnels have allowed militants and weapons in from the Palestinian enclave. "The large-scale destruction of at least 3,255 buildings in Rafah to counter the threat of smuggling tunnels was likely disproportionate and did not meet Egypt's obligations under international human rights law or the laws of war," HRW said.

Since July 2013 "the military has arbitrarily razed thousands of homes in a once-populated buffer zone on the border with the Gaza Strip, destroying entire neighborhoods and hundreds of hectares (acres) of farmland," the New York-based rights watchdog said. Egypt has stepped up its battle against militants who have carried out ongoing attacks in the area since then army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took power from Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July 2013. >>>

Gazan refugees denied rights in Jordan for over 45 years - Aaron Magid -  Born in Jordan, 27-year-old Muhammad’s life hardly resembles a typical Jordanian's. Lacking any political or civil rights, Muhammad explained that he is forbidden from working in most jobs, even a teacher at a public school. Muhammad faces these rigorous restrictions because his parents fled to Jordan from Gaza following the 1967 War.

“Compared to other Jordanian citizens, I am nothing,” explained Muhammad, who declined to provide his last name. Sadly, Muhammad’s predicament is not unique. Approximately 140,000 Palestinian refugees from Gaza live in a similar limbo as Muhammad in Jordan: denied most rights and often forced into a life of harsh poverty.

Nearly 2.1 million Palestinian refugees live in Jordan. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, 350,000 Palestinians fled to Jordan with the majority moving to the West Bank, then controlled by the Hashemite Kingdom. The Nationality Law of 1954 provided Palestinian residents of the West Bank with full Jordanian citizenship after King Abdullah I annexed the West Bank on April 24, 1950. However, when the new wave of Palestinian refugees arrived in Jordan escaping from Gaza in the >>>>

Jerusalem’s sickness runs deeper than the occupation - Amjad Iraqi - Jerusalem’s real problem is the nationalist and religious fervor in both Israeli and Palestinian societies that foment the greed, competitiveness, obsession, insecurity, and desire for control of the city and its narrative.

When I was a kid, a family trip from Tira to Jerusalem was considered a special occasion. About twice a year we would drive straight to the Old City, eat shawarma and kunafeh at the same restaurant and sweet shop, and best of all, visit the Dome of the Rock (“al-Sakhra”) and al-Aqsa mosque.

Even though I wasn’t very religious, it was hard not to be enamored by the Old City and its religious sites, and to know that the Western Wall and the Holy Sepulchre, holy to Jews and Christians respectively, were only short walks away.

Sadly, that childhood sense of wonder evaporated as I became more aware of what was really happening to the city around us: the poverty of Palestinian neighborhoods; the Israeli flags waving on the roofs of stone houses; and the armed soldiers and policemen roaming the streets. >>>

Regrets but never an apology: When the IDF makes 'mistakes' - For Jews, Yom Kippur is a time to ask forgiveness from those one has harmed during the course of the year. The Israeli army has a hard time with the concept of saying it is sorry or asking forgiveness. Regretful? Sure. Sorry? Not when the victim is Palestinian. - Noam Rotem

Ma’amoun al-Dam was 12 years old when he left his house to play in a nearby field and an inexplicable chain of events led to an Israeli Air Force jet shooting a missile at him, killing him on the spot. “We found no fault in this attack, despite the regrettable outcome,” the military prosecution said in a statement about the tragic end to this innocent child. “There was no evidence to support a conclusion that the attack was carried out illegally.”

The Israeli army has killed hundreds of Palestinian children in recent years, but it has said sorry a grand total of no times. Al-Dam’s case is just one example of the creative ways the IDF apologizes. Or rather, the ways it does everything in its power to avoid asking for forgiveness. Often times it “regrets,” or it “didn’t intend to,” or it “looks into the incident” and comes out clean — there’s always some coincidence in which innocent civilians are killed by the IDF, which admits to their innocence but never asks for forgiveness for killing them. >>>

Israeli Police Can Now Use Snipers Against Teenagers Throwing Stones - Carimah Townes -  Claims that the rifles are non-lethal have drawn scrutiny. Israeli police were once authorized to use them in the past, but during the Palestinian uprising known as the Second Intifada, the weapons killed a number of youth in the West Bank. Police were subsequently prohibited from using the guns which now are re-introduced. >>>

How to neutralize stone throwers — without killing them - Lisa Goldman - End the occupation, and extend full civil rights to Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem. It’s that simple >>>

Gaza in the U.S. Media: A Conversation with Omar Baddar - Omar Baddar - During the second Intifada, the narrative in the US media was extremely one sided - that Israel was the victim of Palestinian violence and had to protect itself. Now, it is portrayed as a war between two equal parties. An improvement of sorts, but still a deeply problematic false moral equivalence between an occupier and an oppressed occupied population.(...) Americans were more open to the argument that the Israeli response was disproportionate, but not so much to the idea that Israel was the aggressor to begin with. >>>
